Ep. 023: Perseverance and Discipline: Rebecca Moore’s Journey in Multifamily

Dustin Miles sat down with longtime colleague and friend Rebecca Moore of Starboard Equity to discuss her journey and insights into multifamily syndication. With over a decade of experience and a track record of building successful partnerships, Moore’s story is one of persistence and passion for real estate investing.

Moore, now an established multifamily syndicator, explained her role in bringing together investors to acquire apartment properties. Her mission is to create opportunities for individuals to invest collectively, leveraging pooled resources to secure high-quality assets. “We find people that want to invest in apartments, we pull it all together, and put a down payment on an apartment,” she explained.

During the conversation, Rebecca reflected on the challenges new syndicators face, especially those looking to become general partners (GPs). She acknowledged that 2023 was a tough year for many in the industry, but expressed optimism about the opportunities emerging in 2024.

Her top piece of advice? Never quit. Moore emphasized that success in multifamily syndication doesn’t come easy — and that persistence is key. She recalled her own early struggles with Dustin, where they spent over a year and submitted more than 26 Letters of Intent (LOIs) before landing their first deal. “It’s not easy, but it’s a gratifying game,” she noted.

Moore also highlighted the importance of continuous underwriting and deal analysis. “Every time you do it, you get better. You learn how to finesse the numbers, and you start seeing the potential in properties more clearly,” she said.

Discipline and a relentless work ethic have been central to her success. “You can’t take weekends off if you’re serious about this. You need to have that fire within you and the discipline to keep going,” Rebecca advised. She stressed the need for responsiveness and seizing every learning opportunity, recalling how she never missed a call from Dustin during her early days because each conversation brought valuable insights.
