Ep. 037: Medicine, Multifamily, and Mastery: The Dual Career of Dr. J

When you think of a physician, you might picture long hospital shifts—not someone owning 60+ rental units or hosting wealth-building workshops. But Dr. Janeeka “Dr. J” Benoit is redefining what a fulfilling and flexible career in medicine can look like.

Early Roots in Medicine and Entrepreneurship

In her conversation with Dustin Miles of Momentum Multifamily, Dr. Benoit reflects on a childhood shaped by both healthcare and entrepreneurship. Growing up in Brooklyn, she often accompanied her father—a nephrologist and practice owner—on hospital rounds. Watching him balance patient care, business responsibilities, and family planted the early seeds for her own vision of a flexible, purpose-driven career.

From Accidental Landlord to Multifamily Investor

Dr. Benoit’s start in real estate was far from intentional. During her medical residency, she became an “accidental landlord,” juggling property management with demanding training. The real test came during the pandemic, when eviction moratoriums and non-paying tenants created serious financial strain.

“I was on a Zoom call with my CPA, literally in tears… overwhelmed,” she recalls.

Instead of advising her to scale back, her CPA surprised her: “You need to go bigger.”

That push led her to coach Michael Ely and a real estate mastermind group. Though initially intimidated by seasoned multimillion-dollar investors, she immersed herself in conferences, education, and mentorship—slowly building both confidence and momentum.

The Importance of Community and Mentorship

Dr. Benoit credits much of her growth to the structure, community, and accountability she found in the mastermind. The relationships she formed provided not just knowledge, but also trusted partners for her first multifamily deals—from a 12-unit in North Carolina to a 54-unit property where she invested as both an LP and GP.

Her journey underscores a central theme: collaboration, aligned values, and supportive networks accelerate success.

Balancing Medicine, Investing, and Life

Today, Dr. Benoit continues practicing medicine full-time—but with the flexibility she always envisioned. She travels, prioritizes fitness (including running the New York City Marathon), and practices medicine on her own terms. At the same time, she is steadily scaling her real estate portfolio and influence.

The Wealth Prescription: Helping Others Do Both

Inspired to help other healthcare professionals build wealth without leaving medicine, she created “The Wealth Prescription”—a series of meetups and webinars designed to empower doctors and dentists to invest in real estate confidently and responsibly. Her core message is simple: “You can do both.”

Looking Ahead

Dr. Benoit continues to nurture key relationships, invest in her growth, and educate others. She recommends “The Best Ever Syndication Book” by Joe Fairless, and connects with her community through LinkedIn (Janeeka Benoit) and Instagram.

Her story is a powerful reminder that you can design a career—and a life—that supports your passions, your income, and your community, all on your own terms.
